As an athlete, there are many things you need to keep in mind, like how to quicken your speed, how to jump higher, and how to be stronger and more efficient. However, little did you know, you also need to think about your smile. If you’re not careful, your teeth and gums could be severely harmed while you participate in sports and activities.
To help you keep your smile and oral health in tip-top shape while you’re active in Flint, Michigan, please do the following things:
First, wear a mouthguard the entire time you’re in the game or at practice. It’s best to wear a mouthguard while you are active so your smile stays protected from the sports balls, elbows, knees, and other hard objects that could hit it. There are many oral injuries that can occur while you are running, jumping, and playing, and it’s best to prevent them as much as possible. Some common injuries include chipping, breaking, or knocking out your teeth or misaligning your jaw. So, please protect your teeth and gums with a mouthguard while you are active.
Second, try to avoid drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks are high in sugar and acid. This is an issue because sugar promotes cavities and acid promotes tooth sensitivity. So, it’s best to set these drinks aside and stick with water. If water doesn’t do the trick, you can drink unsweetened coconut water.
Third, combat dry mouth as much as possible. Dry mouth is a common dental issue among athletes and it involves the inability to produce the proper and needed amount of saliva. When this happens, food particles and bacteria fail to be washed away and your oral cavity becomes vulnerable to dental issues. To help avoid this, frequently drink water and brush your teeth after your games and practices.
If you do these things, you’ll be on your way toward the best and healthiest smile and oral health you deserve.
