Did you know that bruxism is a common yet potentially serious oral health condition that typically affects you while you sleep? Bruxism occurs when you unconsciously grind your teeth. If you require treatment for bruxism, bite plates and mouth guards are often used.

Detecting bruxism can be difficult. Oftentimes, bruxism goes undetected for many years because its symptoms typically occur while you’re asleep. To check for symptoms, take notes of how you feel when you wake up. Are you experiencing any tooth sensitivity? Do you have any pain that feels like an earache but isn’t coming from your ears? Do you have any indentations on your tongue, or chew and bite marks on your inner mouth tissue? Do you have a locked jaw or does it feel like your jaw is not opening and closing completely? If so, you may be suffering from bruxism.

For further help, ask a sleep partner or roommate if they notice any signs of heavy snoring or audible grinding of your teeth. These symptoms are typically signs of bruxism. Furthermore, if you have ever been diagnosed with sleep apnea or a TMJ disorder, you are at an increased risk for bruxism. If you think you may have bruxism, come visit or dentist for an oral exam.
