Unfortunately, there are many things in the world today that can cause tooth loss. These things can result in incomplete, unhealthy, and even misaligned smiles. This is why it’s best to avoid tooth loss altogether. To help you do so, Dr. Steven Rodriguez would like to tell you a little more about the leading causes of tooth loss and how to prevent them.

The first cause is gum disease. Gum disease is a dangerous issue that develops when you fail to remove the plaque (which is the white sticky film) off of your teeth. Eventually, the plaque continues to grow and it irritates the gums. Once it turns into tartar, which is a toxic substance, it infects the gum pockets. Then, spreads to the underlying bone and begins to deteriorate it. This causes loose and lost teeth. It’s important to prevent this disease by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting your dentist every six months.

The second cause is tooth decay. Tooth decay is another serious issue, and it develops when you have poor oral hygiene, have an unbalanced, high-carbohydrate diet, and fail to keep up with your regular dental cleanings and exams. If you don’t get the cavity treated right away, it could spread and completely damage the tooth to the point where it is no longer salvageable. At this point, tooth extraction is the only option.

The third cause is oral injury. It’s common to knock a tooth out of place when you play high-contact sports and activities without wearing a mouthguard. If you don’t protect the smile, hard, forceful objects can hit your mouth and knock out one or more teeth. So, it’s important to wear a mouthguard while you are active.
