Your wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge in your mouth. Oftentimes, they don’t grow into place until you are around 20 years of age. Generally, wisdom teeth cause more harm than good, which is why your dentist, Dr. Steven Rodriguez, usually recommends extracting them. So, if you’re about to extract your wisdom teeth, our Healthy Smiles Dental Care™ of Flint dental team has some recovery tricks for you! Those are:

Trick No. 1: Keep a clean piece of gauze over the pocket of the missing tooth. Apply pressure for 45 minutes to help stop the bleeding. If needed, continue this process with a new gauze pad until the bleeding stops. Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Trick No. 2: Ice outside the area to keep the swelling down. We recommend icing for 10 minutes and then taking a 20-minute break. Repeat this process as necessary.

Trick No. 3: Take the pain medications and antibiotics prescribed to you as recommended. Doing so will relieve the discomfort and will also keep the area safe from infection. If you do not have prescribed medication, you can relieve the pain by taking over-the-counter pain pills.

Trick No. 4: Keep to a strict liquid diet for the first 24 hours after surgery. Then, keep a soft-foods diet for another three days. Eating liquid and soft foods will keep particles from being lodged into the pocket of the missing tooth.

Trick No. 5: Continue brushing your teeth as normal but do not brush the teeth that are neighboring the affected area for the first 24 hours. After the first day, you can begin brushing those teeth in a gentle and careful manner.

The recovery process is extremely important when it comes to tooth extraction, so we strongly recommend using these five tricks so you can return to a strong and successful oral health.
